What does Core Aeration Do?

What is Core Aeration really? Well it is the process of removing hundreds of small soil plugs from a lawn, to help break up soil compaction and improve root growth. Aeration is a very beneficial natural lawn care practice toward achieving a health and beautiful lawn, but most lawn owners don’t realize it or understand the process and think it is too expensive. We are attempting here to give a synopsis of what Core Aeration is.

Core Aeration is the removal of small cores of soil to allow air, moisture and fertilizer down to the root zone. Core Aeration is also the process of pulling soil plugs to open the soil below the lawn for better nutrient and water movement as well.

Core Aeration is a practice that can be done in both spring and fall, some heavy trafficked areas can be done more often. Some turf specialists say that Core Aeration is a high demand service and we only have a small seasonal window period to work with. Core Aeration is an important part of a lawn care program and should be done when needed.

The process to Aerate a lawn should be done by passing the lawn at least two different directions to insure good coverage. Aerate the day after a rain shower or water your lawn the day before. Aerate the lawn using an approach suited to the degree of compaction. Some lawn experts suggest to Core Aerate your lawn right before winter and leave the holes exposed.
